| Melissa Lawrence's lovely tribute to Hero posted on "ShowDals": March 27, 2004 Yesterday I said goodbye to my Hero. He was my once in a lifetime dog. I picked him long-distance from pictures. It took some convincing to get Sue to send him all the way from Virginia to Arizona - she wanted to keep him closer. When I got him out of the crate at the airport in Phoenix I knew why - pictures didn't do him justice. He was gorgeous, had a look at me attitude and was sure he knew everyone in the airiport, they were all his friends. I called Sue and told her that he was too good of a dog for me, I was still a novice handler. She told me he was in the right place. I can't thank her enough for trusting me with that special little boy. We had a wonderful, long show career in conformation, obedience and agility. Hero won his last Non-Sporting Group at 9 years old and last year at 12 competed in Agility and Open Obedience at DCA and qualified in Novice Obedience at the DCC National Specialty in July. More than that he was a great ambassador for our breed. As a young dog he was the fire prevention dog for Rural/Metro Fire Department in Tucson and visited schools teaching the kids how to stop, drop and roll. As a therapy dog he visited nursing homes and children's hospitals. He did PR work for the National Office of MDA and was featured on a poster for one of their campaigns with fire departments. Later on, Hero accompanied me on sales trips and demonstrated how hunting retrievers worked - he didn't hunt but he would retrieve all day long, worked multiple marks and could be cast to a blind retrieve. I'm very grateful to the breeders who selected him for their special girls and to those who chose to bring one of his puppies into your homes. It's very comforting to know part of him lives on.
